I've seen these babies push through drought-crusted soil, layers of corn stalks and cover crop residue. You can actually look into the crack of the splitting bean and see little leaves in there. In fact, the bean shape you see poking out of the ground will form the first two leaves of the plant!  You can actually look into the crack of the splitting bean and see little leaves in there.
