Whiskey Acres

I featured Whiskey Acres a couple weeks ago on my Facebook page after reading a blog series by Holly Spangler, featuring their "farmcrafted" corn whiskey. The story was too good. Too interesting. And I was going to be in the Dekalb area with time to kill that week. I had to check it out for myself!I was not disappointed.Upon arrival, I was warmly greeted by Jaime Walter, one of the owners, and was given a quick tour of the farm, distillery and tasting room. I was warned in advance the day was a busy one . I met a Chicago reporter, Ag in the Classroom tour group and trainee tour guides all in the hour or two of my quick visit. I love being a "fly on the wall" during shoots, and that's exactly what I got to do.After chatting with Nick Nagele, a partner in the business, I learned that they still had a need for photos of their tasting room, and I was happy to photograph it:Gorgeous place, right? And that's not even close to the best part. The tour made for the most interesting afternoon I've had in a long time. Did you know bourbon can only be manufactured in the U.S.? Me either. And that's the very tippy top of the iceberg of knowledge you will learn on a visit.Beautiful place. Interesting stuff. Top-notch people. They've built this thing from the ground up. A lot of sweat was involved, and I'm not talking about just growing the corn. The tasting room you just looked at? They put it together themselves. The stones the patio is made out of? They actually dug those out of the ground on a nearby farm! The website copy, the legal battles, the tax documentation - they do it all. To top it all off, they are some of the nicest people you will every meet.Whiskey Acres Visitors Information
